Warmer, sunny days are finally here in El Paso, which make outdoor workouts like Running, biking, hiking, perfect in El Paso. While El Paso is much hotter than other cities, we can use our warm climate and desert landscape to our benefit.
Start your day by checking the weather and try to find out the best time of the day with lowest temps. It could early in the morning or late in the evening, we recommend you to fit your workout schedule in the coolest time of the day. Waking up a bit earlier will even give you more energy for the day!
Clothing Tips: Try use Lightweight, breathable, wicking clothes during an outdoor workout. Wearing a hat to keep the hot sun off your head and face also helps. Shorts are almost a necessity and comfortable running or hiking shoes. While it may seem, counterproductive many people opt to wear long sleeve workout clothes, to keep them from getting sun burned. For sure, you will want to keep your skin as dry as possible to regular your body temperature and manage the sweat coming off your body and any external moisture. Here are a couple of outdoor outfits suggestions you can wear depending of the weather.
Change up the type of workout to fit the temperature: On hot and humid days, choose cooler cardio activities like biking in the wind or swimming at a local El Paso pool, like the brand new El Paso West Side Natatorium, facility that includes competition courses for 50-meter, 25 meter, and 25 yard swimming events, water polo events, and synchronized swimming events, if you can’t wait to take a dip on a pool here is a list of swimming pools located WestSide.
As the heat increases, look for cooler places to workout, like the best gym in El Paso, Her Gym! On cooler days, go out and hike our beautiful Franklin Mountains. This November the Franklin Mountains State Park will be the host of a True Texas Mountain Race. The Franklin Mountains Trail Ruins will include a 50k, 27k, 13.1 half, King/Queen of the Mountain, 10K, and 5K races. Most of the trails low are desert trail that is run able terrain with easy technical trail. The recommend routes for each distance in the King/Queen of the Mountain race will be about 3.5 and 8 miles which will start at the Mundy’s Gap trail head and go to the peak of North Franklin Mountain, and then back down to the start, the goal is to be the fastest to touch the peak and get back to the bottom. Slow down and do shorten but effective workouts: For sure Summer isn’t the best time to push yourself with outdoor workouts, so if you can only handle 10 minutes at a time, do what you can, or exercise twice in one day. If you’re set on getting in a 30-minute workout, move with less intensity or do intervals to avoid overheating. Remember it’s OK to take breaks too.
Drink water all day, not just before or after your workout: Staying hydrated will help prevent some of the symptoms you may experience from exercising in heat such as dizziness, stomach cramps, and headaches. During your run, sip four to eight ounces of water every 15 to 20 minutes.
